Jean Jacques Bachelier
(Paris 1724–1806) Two brawling dogs under a tabouret surrounded by playing cards, oil on canvas, 65 x 103 cm, framed,
This charming representation of two dogs under an artistically carved tabouret bears testimony to why Bachelier, along with Oudry, was King Louis XV and Madame de Pompadour's favourite animal painter. In 1750 he was accepted by the Academy as a still life painter. As a follower of Jean Baptiste Oudry he enjoyed the patronage of the King erfreute. It was only in 1763 that Bachelier was also accepted by the Academy as a history painter, that is, the most sought after artistic category. His smooth, elegant manner of painting, which continued the great tradition of Oudry, is evident in this painting. In his later years, Bachelier became professor at the Academy. His style of painting contributed considerably to an improvement in floral painting at the Sèvres Porcelain Manufactory. He was appointed its director by his great patron, the Marquise de Pompadour.
